Our History

Bateson’s Martial Arts, formerly Yuen’s Family Martial Arts Maple Ridge, was established in 1996 by Perry and Karen Bateson.

batesons-logo-webWhile working full time for Proctor & Gamble, Perry, a life long martial arts practitioner, started teaching Taekwondo two nights a week. Monday class was held in East Maple Ridge at the former Albion Community Centre while Thursday night class was held in West Maple Ridge at Hammond Community Centre. After one year and eight students, they moved into their current location at 11393 Kingston Street in Maple Ridge.

In 2002, after steady growth over the first five years in their new location, they purchased the unit next door, doubling their floor space. Today, they run three companies out of this location, Bateson’s Martial Arts, Northwest Jiu Jitsu, and Kinderkicks. They currently offer Taekwondo, Gung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, HIIT-Fit, Self Defense, and Kinderkicks, a preschool development program. With 300+ students and ten staff members, Bateson’s Martial Arts projects healthy growth in the years to come.
